#Metaprogram
One of the singular best ideas to bring to C. Just this and standardized closures would really take C into modern territory IMO. (some proper static type introspection would be really nice too, but that's far easier to just metaprogram myself)
Defer TS going out in ~7 days. Speak now or forever hold your peace.

shoutout to @mattkeeter.com for building a decent CSG LISP experience but Studio really desperately needs to be in Racket so I can metaprogram it better

Exciting new work led by Josh Rule on how to model human learning symbolically.

The new model out-performs key alternatives, including a code generation LLM and previous symbolic models.

Hoopy superfans will know that my answer to this is smalltalk

It’s useless, but utterly fascinating, and understanding it will help you understand every language that came afterwards that much better, plus give you an unholy urge to metaprogram. Annoy your friends!
I think we have a lot of software engineers on the network but not a ton of programming talk so I'm gonna kick this into gear a bit, here we go:

What technology or programming language do you think is the most underrated? #software

Yesterday I went down a rabbit hole of personal reflection (no pun intended) of meta programming and how the approach to an agentic system I took with MOTHER, written in #fsharp, actually aligns nicely with F#’s lineage in the programming language world.

MOTHER, Metaprogramming, and the Meta Language
I've written about MOTHER's philosophy and its mechanics. This post is about what I realized after I had some time to step back and reflect on the system once it was in place. MOTHER is a metaprogram...

Not to be confused with Queasyquotation where you metaprogram by building strings you pass to eval(parse()).

Yeag, for my purposes a simple metaprogram does the job well enough, but I'm not trying to completely cover language standards for every use case so I get it.

If there's anyone working on a TS for actual closures that don't rely on trampolining like GCC's nested functions I'd love to know.

One thing that eluded me was proving termination for the mutually recursive memoized function. Past that, I think you could maybe write a metaprogram to generate these from regular recursive functions, but that's a bit past my ability level.

Nah, it's that thing that is used to automate lots of stuff and can metaprogram other languages.

Afaik not running on Nintendo's yet.

But has been used to help test Nintendo / Xbox games since 2010.

So probably the thing that drives the Mario Kart in tests.

Guess I'm really going to rewrite it in LISP.

Or rather, I'm going to write some LISP to read your code's AST and programmatically rewrite that as LISP, because why program when you can metaprogram.

Then you get metabugs and metaheadaches and metaaccolades.

But seriously, this needs to be […]

it's nice because it's pretty compact. and it's easy to metaprogram with via typeclass metaprogramming

to metaprogram when you're attempting to optimize for size. In a properly statically typed language it's relatively easy to implement treeshaking and get your final binary down to something very minuscule

I'm *this* close to start making my own metaprogram to read C files to expose the needed info

It's a manageable rabbit hole imo, so it might be worth it

C++ Metaprogramming: Compilation of Calculations, from Basic Techniques to Advanced Methods
This article demonstrates how modern C++ lets you perform computations at compile time using templates, constexpr, and related features. It covers classic template-based metaprogramming (e.g., factorial and Fibonacci calculations), then shows how constexpr functions, loops, classes, and other modern constructs simplify and optimize compile-time calculations. You’ll learn best practices, common pitfalls, and how to balance readability, performance, and debugging complexity when leveraging compile-time computations in your code.
