I love finding evidence of earlier attempts to ascertain the ancestry of the Atcherleys, so this exchange between John Denison Atcherley and George Frederick Tudor Sherwood (one of the founders of @sogorg.bsky.social) was a fabulous #FamilySearch Labs Text Search discovery. #Genealogy
Two letters, one (left) handwritten, the other (right) typewritten. P/O (Pilot Officer) J D Atcherley wrote, from the Officers' Mess at Cranwell, Lincolnshire, on 13th August 1940 asking whether the 'Dear Sir' he was writing to might be able to help, as he was "anxious to trace the history of the Atcherley family". The anonymous reply indicated that Atcherley was well known to the letter's author as a Shropshire name, and that further research could be carried out at a rate of three guineas for a general search over two or three days, or five guineas for a week's search. Another image in this series, not shown here, identified the genealogist in question as George Frederick Tudor Sherwood of London.

The focus of the project is on the personal materials of participants, such as letters and photographs, which permit us to experience the war through their eyes and their words. These are very often the stories of ordinary Canadians, largely forgotten and overlooked. Our mission is to digitally preserve and continue to make freely accessible this important part of Canada’s heritage for this generation and future generations. The vision of the project is to continue to expand this repository of Canadian archival materials by collaborating with Canadians to preserve and share the individual and collective stories that have shaped our past Accessibility to the past is key to understanding who we are as a nation. The only way I know of is for marriages, using The Guild of #OneNameStudies Marriage Locator. If there’s enough data for your area, it’ll tell you which church!

Now this is a resource! The Boarding Schools' Association has created a Book of Remembrance website to link all the independent schools that have a Roll of Honour for their alumni. Level of info varies but some are very detailed (Winchester College!)

Heads-up to anyone ordering wills from the E&W Probate search service. I've had one case so far where I got negative search results. I was able to fetch the page I needed by searching for a different surname on the same page.
