“It's amazing how pollution has dropped in #Paris in 15 years. @annehidalgo.bsky.social has filled the city with bike-lanes & not only has she reduced pollution by 40% but she’s also been re-elected.”

Trading car space for green space, bike space, kid space…trading pollution for people. Good trade.
Es alucinante cómo ha bajado la contaminación en París en 15 años. Anne Hidalgo lo ha llenado todo de carriles bici y no sólo ha reducido la contaminación en un 40%, sino que ha sido reelegida.

Evolugen and the Algonquins of the Pikwàkanagàn First Nation to Discuss Development of South March Battery Energy Storage System Project in West Carleton
To the West Carleton community, Evolugen and the Algonquins of the Pikwàkanagàn First Nation have been actively discussing the potential development of the South March Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project on Marchurst Road. We're providing an update on this project and outlining our next steps. Ottawa’s electricity demands are projected to increase significantly, growing by 166% by 2043, which is double the provincial growth rate, according to the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO). Expanding our electrical infrastructure is vital for preventing blackouts and supporting new housing and the growth of energy-intensive industries like Artificial Intelligence. The Ontario government and IESO are committed to expanding infrastructure through competitive procurement processes like the E-LT and LT-1. Meeting the daily fluctuations in electricity demand while relying on baseload nuclear and hydroelectric power presents ongoing challenges. The IESO has identified battery storage systems as essential for managing peak demand, and selected projects from Evolugen and AOP as the most cost-effective solutions for the Ottawa region. These battery storage projects proved to be considerably less expensive than natural gas alternatives during the LT-1 procurement. The South March BESS project has been specifically chosen to address these system needs and is being designed to minimize impacts on the local community and the environment. The site is strategically located near an existing high-voltage transmission line and exceeds the City of Ottawa’s setback requirements. Recent technical studies and fieldwork have confirmed the site’s suitability. Further seasonal evaluations, including migration and habitat studies, are planned for the summer and autumn to inform technical experts from the city and province. This analysis will ensure the project's compliance and that it meets rigorous safety standards for power system infrastructure, as confirmed by Ottawa Fire Services and professional engineers. We recently submitted a request for a Municipal Support Resolution (MSR) to Ottawa City Council. An MSR demonstrates the municipality's willingness to consider new energy resources and evaluate project proposals through the city’s development approval processes. It’s important to note that an MSR is not a final approval but rather a step towards formal evaluations and a future vote on a site-specific Official Plan Amendment (OPA). If approved, we’re committed to additional public consultations and ongoing engagement throughout the development process. Stay informed about project updates and consultations at www.GetChargedOttawa.ca. We appreciate your continued engagement and support as we work together to deliver a clean and affordable power grid for West Carleton and Ottawa. Sincerely, Geoff Wright, SVP Head of Development, Evolugen.

Stalled Negotiations Between Ontario and Teachers' Unions Threaten School Year
Ontario teachers' unions are at an impasse with the provincial government over contract negotiations, which could delay agreements well into the school year. The stalemate centers on disputes over whether key issues like salaries and benefits should be negotiated centrally by the province or locally by school boards. Unions argue the government is undermining local bargaining by centralizing all negotiation topics, while the province maintains its two-tiered system. With contracts set to expire, the Labour Relations Board will now mediate to determine central vs. local bargaining issues, potentially prolonging talks for weeks or months. Experts note this僵局 reflects broader challenges with Ontario's centralized education funding model, which shifted control from local school boards to the province in the 1990s. The delay could impact staffing and resources as schools prepare for the new term, though immediate job actions like strikes are unlikely without formal negotiations.

Ontario Minister's International Travel Expenses Covered by Riding Association
Ontario’s Minister of Economic Development, Vic Fedeli, has been scrutinized for charging his riding association over $21,000 for international travel expenses related to trade missions, while taxpayers cover flight, hotel, and transportation costs. Public records reveal Fedeli billed over $180,000 for government-related trips between 2023 and 2025, but meal expenses were partially reimbursed by his Nipissing riding association. This practice contradicts Fedeli’s public claims of strict fiscal discipline, where he stated meals are not expensed. Critics argue the arrangement obscures taxpayer-funded costs, with opposition parties questioning transparency. The Progressive Conservative Party defended the practice, asserting Fedeli personally funds his meal expenses. Similar controversies have emerged with other MPPs, highlighting concerns about political accountability and misuse of public funds.

Ontario government challenges order to release documents on blue licence plate program under freedom-of-information request
The Ontario government led by Premier Doug Ford is taking legal action to prevent the release of internal documents related to its discontinued blue licence plate program. The case stems from a freedom-of-information (FOI) request submitted by The Canadian Press in 2022, which sought records about the province’s plans for handling the rollout and eventual removal of the plates. According to the Information and Privacy Commissioner (IPC), the government identified 15 relevant records but refused to disclose them, citing exemptions for confidential advice from civil servants and information related to pending policy decisions. The Canadian Press appealed the refusal, and the IPC ultimately ruled that although the exemptions applied, the public interest in disclosure outweighed the need for confidentiality. The commissioner emphasized that the documents could provide insight into how the government evaluated different approaches, including costs and benefits associated with managing the problematic plates. After an initial reconsideration request was also denied by the IPC, the provincial government chose to escalate the matter to court, arguing that the commissioner’s ruling was unreasonable and lacked sufficient evidentiary support. The dispute unfolds against a broader backdrop of criticism regarding transparency in Ontario, particularly following recent changes to FOI laws that restrict access to records involving the premier and cabinet ministers. The blue licence plates, introduced in early 2020, were later withdrawn after concerns about poor nighttime readability. Although the program was halted, nearly 200,000 plates remain in circulation. The government has since indicated that the plates will be phased out gradually through natural attrition, a plan publicly disclosed in 2024. Opposition politicians and transparency advocates have criticized the government’s decision to pursue legal action, arguing it reflects an ongoing pattern of limiting public access to information. They contend that taxpayers are effectively funding repeated legal challenges aimed at keeping government decision-making details out of the public domain, even in cases where the policy issue has already been acknowledged and addressed.
