Wow, this is amazing! This image of the Apollo 11 landing site was taken in 1967, two years before the landing 🤩

Thanks, @inverting-vision.bsky.social, for digging those up and making the comparisons with the LRO images!

Loved this thread by @spacemarschall.bsky.social showing the location of the Apollo 11 lunar module. Wanted to find the same spot in Lunar Orbiter photographs, for a before/after. Here's the same location as viewed from Lunar Orbiter V on August 12, 1967.

More info in 🧵 (1/3)

On February 18, 2021, NASA landed the Perseverance rover on Mars. HiRISE on the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) observed the descent from Mars orbit. Can you spot Perseverance and the parachute?

Trust in experts should extend only as far as their expertise. Because Brian Cox can explain quantum physics doesn't mean he understands politics. Exploiting space doesn't equate to us stopping the exploitation of Earth. It just means we'll do both. www.facebook.com/reel/1285795...

So we explored Mars for a little bit! It was an entire ordeal. And we made some human and non-human friends along the way. Long story...

While we missed the Solar System, we didn't expect to be back so soon!

Semi-Autonomous Legged Robots Could Accelerate Mars and Moon Exploration
A recent study published in Frontiers in Space Technologies explores the potential of four-legged robots, like Anybotics' ANYmal, for planetary exploration on Mars and the Moon. Unlike traditional wheeled rovers, legged robots can navigate steep, fractured, and uneven terrain, opening access to previously unreachable areas. Equipped with a robotic arm, a microscopic imager, and a Raman spectrometer, ANYmal can autonomously identify and analyze geological targets, including minerals and rock textures, providing data crucial for astrobiology and resource utilization. The study tested two exploration strategies: a semi-autonomous multi-target approach, where the robot independently completed tasks, and a human-guided approach. Results showed that the semi-autonomous method significantly reduced mission time while maintaining high target identification accuracy, demonstrating the potential for faster, more efficient exploration. These advances are particularly important given communication delays between Earth and distant planetary sites, which make real-time control impractical. By combining autonomous navigation, in-situ scientific analysis, and mobility over challenging terrain, legged robots like ANYmal could transform the future of space missions, enabling more extensive and independent scientific investigations on Mars, the Moon, and beyond.
