I've always been fascinated by Earth's interior and how scientists have described their textures. I decided to make my own slice while at @newsela.bsky.social. #geology, #earth, #platetectonics

⚒️🍎🧪Merry Christmas!
Check out this episode about a beautiful red and green rock called eclogite. Some people call it 'Christmas rock'. This stuff is a key driver of platetectonics!

Seismic evidence for oceanic plate delamination offshore Southwest Iberia - Nature Geoscience
The lithospheric mantle may be delaminating from the crust in an oceanic plate segment offshore Southwest Iberia, which could be the ultimate cause of the 1755 Great Lisbon Earthquake, according to se...

It was quite a bit of work but it was worth it!!

Some new tectonic plate puzzles ready for my workshops at the Open House Festival in London this weekend 🤩

Now to wash all the paint mess I have made in the process 🥲

About 1.1 billion years ago, tectonic forces nearly split North America from Kansas to Michigan. Though the rift failed, it left a deep scar beneath the Midwest that helps scientists understand how continents evolve.

North America's 'broken heart': The billion-year-old scar from when the continent nearly ripped apart
The Midcontinent Rift is a giant tear that formed in what is now the U.S. Midwest 1.1 billion years ago. Nicknamed North America's "broken heart," it is filled with solidified magma and lava.

Gros Morne National Park in Newfoundland important in establishment of plate tectonics & continental drift in the mid-20thC.
These are the Tablelands, which are made up of rocks from the Earth’s Mantle which were pushed to the surface when two tectonic plates collided
