How we learned the continents move.

1912: Wegener proposes drift. 1950s: Marie Tharp maps a rift along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. 1963: magnetic stripes show the seafloor spreading.

In this new Geology paper, we reconstructed a previously suspected but undocumented plate between Farallon and North America. We recognized the remains in the geology of California and the Caribbean region, and revived the Franciscan Plate into its former glory! #Geology #PlateTectonics

There may be an entire continent hiding beneath the Pacific Ocean. 🌏

In the landmark #GSAToday article “Zealandia: Earth’s Hidden Continent,” researchers propose that Zealandia should be considered a continent: geosociety.co/Mortimer_et_al

The Magnitude 9.0 Nightmare: Why the Pacific Northwest is a Ticking Time Bomb
Is the Ground Beneath Your Feet About to Give Way? What if I told you that the Pacific Northwest isn't just beautiful—it's a ticking geological time bomb? While everyone eyes the San Andreas Fault, a much more terrifying monster is waking up: the Cascadia Subduction Zone. This isn't just a rumor; it's a scientific certainty that will redefine everything west of I-5. In this episode, we dive deep into the shattering of the Juan de Fuca Plate—a phenomenon researchers are calling a "train wreck" beneath the ocean floor. We explore the haunting mystery of the 1700 Orphan Tsunami and the Ghost Forests that stand as silent witnesses to the last Magnitude 9.0 megaquake. Why You Can't Afford to Miss This: - The Dual-Coast Threat: Discover how a Cascadia rupture could trigger a chain reaction, igniting the San Andreas Fault within hours. - Overnight Sea-Level Rise: Forget decades; learn how coastal subsidence could drop the land by 6 feet in minutes. - The Infrastructure Crisis: Why our current seismic retrofitting might not be enough to save our bridges and cities. - Survival Innovations: From vertical evacuation towers to the 14-day rule, we look at how the PNW is modeling its future after Japanese disaster preparedness. Whether you're a survivalist or a science nerd, this episode is a wake-up call for anyone living in the Pacific Northwest. The question isn't if it will happen, but if you'll be ready when the land starts to drop. Do you have your 2-week survival kit ready? Share this episode with someone who needs a reality check and subscribe for more deep dives into the science of survival! 🌊🌋 #TheBigOne #Cascadia #PNWLife #EarthquakeReady #SurvivalScience

Dorsale océanique : comment le plancher s'écarte et pourquoi on vient de le voir en direct pour la première fois

❓ Qu'est-ce qu'une dorsale océanique ?
❓ Pourquoi n'avait-on jamais vu l'écartement en direct ?

When you stand in between or above two continents pulling away from each other, it really is quite awe inspiring.

It seems that countries like the Phillipines that suffer a lot of earthquake damage because they are above two colliding lithosphere plates (plate tectonics) should get some help in training local Phillippino architects and planners in designing earthquake proof housing and towns. #PlateTectonics
