New paper! How do RNAs "know" where to go inside a cell? We dug into the sequence elements that route RNAs to the right place. It turns out that, in mammals, they're surprisingly massive (>200 nt), multipartite, and wonderfully complicated. 🧵

Excited to share our latest work! We asked if and how TDP-43 regulates RNA transport in neurons and if this is misregulated in ALS. We found that it works to keep RNAs *out* of neurites, and that loss of TDP-43 activity results in specific RNAs aberrantly accumulating there.

And another interesting paper from Bonasio lab @upenn.edu www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1... "Pseudouridine selects RNAs for extracellular transport" noting among other things "..that MYL6 is a pU-binding protein required for secretion of RNAs." notable MYL6 is found in the Kossiakoff work as a csRBP!

🧬🔬 Why are enhancers transcribed and how does that impact gene regulation? I’m really excited to share our new paper in @science.org showing that noncoding RNAs control the timing of gene activation in embryos. With Mike Levine #ScienceResearch @columbiamed.bsky.social

A few highlights below... 🧵👇
Noncoding transcription controls the developmental dynamics of long-range gene regulation
The genomic regions regulating gene expression are often themselves transcribed into a variety of noncoding RNAs (ncRNAs). However, the regulatory roles of this noncoding transcription remain largely ...
