It’s a negative feedback loop, spermatogenesis is affected, and then there’s poor sperm or no sperm output because of that”.

we're getting caught up on this example but i can provide other examples of searches where gemini is reliably wrong; for instance its answer to "does estradiol suppress spermatogenesis genes on the y chromosome" is reliably "no", which is incorrect

Most animal species pack sperm DNA with protamines instead of histones. Protamines are essential for male fertility. They are among the fastest-evolving genes in animals. That makes little sense. We think we know why, in a new paper led by @ching-hochang.bsky.social. www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

Those X-bearing sperm dropped out during spermatogenesis. Males fathered more than 60% sons (sometimes 70%) instead of 50%. Mendel's fair coin is rigged in some way.

@ching-hochang.bsky.social actually predicted this very outcome in a previous paper: elifesciences.org/articles/85249

The question worth asking:
Could severe inflammation before puberty affect reproductive health in boys? No one knows.
Long-term follow-up of children infected with COVID before puberty will be important.

TL;DR: A Drosophila protamine acts as shields resolving conflict between X and Y chromosomes. Disruption unleashes meiotic drive that kills X-bearing sperm and skews progeny sex ratios. 🪰🧬ᯡ
