Rising early-onset cancer links to generational risk factors! Study of 154,169 UK adults shows systemic aging up 23% S.D. in PhenoAge over cohorts. #CancerRisk PMID:42332142, Nat Med 2026, @NatureMedicine @Harvard https://doi.org/10.1038/s41591-026-04448-w #Medsky #Pharmsky #RNA #ASHG #ESHG 🧪
Biological aging and generational shifts in early-onset cancer risk | Nature Medicine
Incidence of early-onset cancer is rising globally in recent generations, which underscores the need to elucidate the influence of emerging generational risk factors. Systemic and organ-specific aging reflects the cumulative impact of exposures and may provide an integrative and complementary approach to understand early-onset cancer risk. Here among 154,169 young adults from the United Kingdom Biobank, systemic aging measured by PhenoAge increased across birth cohorts, with 23% s.d. increase for those born 1965–1974 versus 1950–1954, and was associated with early-onset solid cancer risk (hazard ratio (HR)per s.d. 1.08; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.03–1.13), driven by lung, gastrointestinal and uterine cancers, independent of genetic risks of aging and cancer. Patterns were consistent using alternative systemic aging measures, including the Klemera–Doubal method-defined age gap and metabolomic-based age gap. These findings were validated partially among 10,262 participants in the Un

Study links radiation exposure to higher cancer mortality rates among flight attendants and pilots
A new study published in JAMA Internal Medicine reveals that flight attendants and pilots face significantly higher risks of dying from radiation-related cancers compared to the general population. Researchers analyzed national death certificate data from over 12 million individuals, identifying occupations with elevated cancer mortality rates. Flight attendants had a 50% higher risk, while pilots showed a 36% increase, for cancers linked to radiation exposure such as leukemia, lymphoma, and thyroid cancer. The study highlights that cosmic radiation at high altitudes contributes to this risk, though limitations include unknown exposure levels and potential misclassification of occupations. Experts emphasize the need for better monitoring and health protocols for aviation crews, suggesting regular skin exams and early cancer screenings. The Federal Aviation Administration acknowledges radiation exposure but lacks federal dose limits or mandatory monitoring. Union leaders stress the importance of addressing this known risk, calling for improved education and accountability in aviation safety.

Reduced physical activity linked to increased cancer risk in new research
A study published in BMC Medicine reveals that replacing daily exercise with sedentary behaviours like sitting or watching TV significantly elevates cancer risk. Researchers analysed data from 59,218 UK Biobank participants aged 61.7 on average, tracking their activity levels over eight years. The findings indicate that even minor reductions in physical activity—such as substituting 15 minutes of movement with sleep or sedentary behaviour—correlate with a 2% increased cancer risk. Conversely, replacing 30 minutes of exercise with inactivity raises the risk by 8%. Dr John Mitchell from University College London warns that even losing two to three minutes daily of vigorous activity, like running for a bus, could heighten cancer susceptibility. The study underscores the importance of maintaining active lifestyles, particularly as people age, and highlights the NHS guidelines recommending at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise weekly. Key insights include the direct link between movement levels and cancer risk reduction, with specific examples of activities that elevate heart rate and promote health.
