Important #PoopScience factoid here! #2026MMM
Sloths do, however, descend to the forest floor to poop once a week, and Brown-throated Sloth had felt nature's call and has been slooooowly moving down the tree trunk to take care of business. Almost to the ground.... #2026MMM

Oldest known fossil evidence of lepidopterans (butterflies & moths), from the Triassic (~236 mya) of Argentina! Scales from the wings of these insects were preserved in dicynodont coprolites, & were likely on plants eaten by the dicynodonts. www.science.org/content/arti... #PoopScience 🧪💩🪨🦋

Bones can tell you only so much about ancient animals' lives. Fossil poo, on the other hand, is full of information about what was going on in their guts. A 200 million-year-old coprolite that may have belonged to a crocodile-like reptile, showed that the animal was hosting a buttload of parasites 🧪
Ancient reptile was riddled with parasites, fossilized poop reveals | CNN
Paleontologists studying fossilized poop, known as a coprolite, recently unearthed rare evidence of parasitic infection in a reptile that lived during the Triassic Period.

I would like to interrupt your doomscrolling for an important announcement: This figure from Ellen Dymit et al., 2025, depicts the proportion of vertebrate prey in felid scat, recorded as a Proportion of Occurrence (PoO). 💩

I'm applying for a USDA permit to be able to import poop, in case you were wondering how my day was going. This involves asking myself questions like, "is poop an animal byproduct?" #poopscience
