WWA's latest rapid assessment is on the 2025-2026 extreme #snowdrought in CO, UT, and WY. The assessment covers the magnitude of extreme low snow-water equivalent (SWE) conditions in early 2026, likely causes of the snow drought, and more.

Two things i dont love about this winter: 1) lack of snow (#snowdrought!!!) - its really way worse than the picture indicates.2) the fact that moths are eating my nice merinowool base layers. ONLY those. I am not good at all at darning.

The western US is in a snow drought

Much of the western U.S. has started 2026 in the midst of a snow drought, which might sound surprising, given the record precipitation from atmospheric rivers hitting the region in recent weeks.

The western US is in a snow drought – here’s how a storm made it worse
A major atmospheric river brought record precipitation to the Pacific Northwest, yet the snow and water supply still suffered. It’s a growing problem.

New study in PNAS shows human-caused warming made the 2026 Western US snow drought 4x more likely, causing a 40 km³ deficit in snow water equivalent—equal to the full capacity of Lake Mead.

The Western US Faces Snow Drought

The mountains of the western US have had average or above-average precipitation in fall and early winter, and warmer temperatures meant that much of it fell as rain. Snowpack is unusually low in the West.

As I keep saying, this is easily one of the most anomalous out-of-season heatwaves that I’ve observed. Its impacts will be far-reaching after an already historic snow drought this winter. Without a pattern change, water concerns will then amplify this summer.

The West relies on mountain snowpack for its water supply. But this year, there's hardly any, and the problems are starting to mount. #ThisIsClimateChange
