One huge problem with AI is that it was designed to have the ethics of a billionaire

folx, I’ve been working on AI "ethics" for almost a decade now & hate to tell you there’s no such thing as "ethical AI"

the only "ethical principle" that works is regulating the shit out of the industry & to take back control of our autonomy, fundamental rights, freedoms & right to exist w/out AI

Today did a MCLE for the firm on AI and legal ethics and did everything in my power to terrify them.

Some "concepts" that some AI boosters don't understand:
- stochastic parrots
- Turing test
- consent
- ethics

The fact that they call themselves "AI Safety" and call us "AI Ethics" is very interesting to me.

What makes them "safety" and what makes us "ethics"?

the ai ethics I want: empirically informed and analytically sound. The ai ethics we get: pushing infrasound conspiracy theories

In case you're wondering how it's going, this morning someone threatened me with an ethics complaint because I *don't* use generative AI in my practice.

I might have lost funding but at least I can do what I want. :) And I want to teach people about AI ethics in 90 second increments! bit.ly/ai-ethics-sy...

While digging around their website, I found their ethics policy—including a section on AI-generated content.

I suspect that’s a part of what happened here. And I’m upset about that too! I did NOT speak to a journalist with the assumption that my interview would be funneled into producing AI slop.

I confess to finding it it a little frustrating when I'm accused of being an "LLM shill" or "breathlessly proselytizing" while my ai+ethics tag has 121 posts and counting simonwillison.net/tags/ai+ethi...

AI is all about theft on multiple levels. Absolutely no ethics whatsoever.
“officials discovered two industrial-scale water hookups feeding a data center campus located 20 miles south of downtown Atlanta. One water connection had been installed without the utility’s knowledge, and the other was not linked to the company’s account and therefore wasn’t being billed.”
A data center drained 30M gallons of water unnoticed — until residents complained about low water pressure — POLITICO
Residents in Fayetteville, Georgia, noticed low water pressure last year. The utility discovered two unaccounted-for water connections at one of the nation’s largest data center campuses.

Some morning musings on AI. We need to stop talking about this as technology issue. It's an ethics & law enforcement issue. Thread:

THIS IS HUGE MORAL MOMENT…

Pope Leo’s first encyclical, Magnifica Humanitas, is focused on AI ethics and regulation.

And the Vatican chose to partner with Anthropic, currently in a major legal fight w/the Trump admin over AI safety and military use of its technology.

Take it from someone who teaches AI ethics at the postgrad level: AI researchers care little about ethics.
(AI, like a rock, does not care, of course) 😜
"We should acknowledge that AI does not care about Ethics, because it is dependent on political authority that can easily shift any ethical responsibility evading legal repercussions."

This is why the field of AI ethics is a scam.

Whenever I see "AI ethics concerns" it's always crap like "should Claude have a social security number?!" and not "should OpenAI all be in jail for marketing ChatGPT like it's your friend and designing it to prioritize continuous engagement above all else?"
Oh yeah, Blake Lemoine basically got addicted to talking to the chatbot, personified it, then asked it a bunch of existential questions, to which it regurgitated mashups of 2001 and I, Robot.

2009's MMO addiction is going to look like peanuts compared to the wave of chatbot addiction that's coming.
