Everyone else does this when they’re digging a pond, don’t they? #archaeosky #archaeology

Welcome to #archaeosky. We have knowledge to share about our human past and why it matters today

We dig trenches & piece together artifacts, analyze biomolecules & translate dead languages. And fight against misinformation

But most of all, we are into dirty old things and not ashamed to admit it 🏺
I made an archaeology starter pack - please feel free to share and follow the folks on here, I'll definitely add people as they start to pop up on BlueSky! 🏺🧪

Archaeosky has lost a shining star yesterday. I'm still processing it. Thanks for being you, Rena.
Very sadly Rena Maguire passed away earlier today, announced by the UCD School of Archaeology on Facebook a little while ago. We at the @pictishartssociety.bsky.social are all deeply shocked and saddened. She was a great friend to the Society and we were very much looking forward to her paper.

Had a great time at the "Earliest Symbols" conference in Bologna. Kudos to Silvia Ferrara, Ludovica Ottaviano, Adhi Agus Oktaviana and all the #sapience team for putting together such a stimulating event on one of the hard problems of archaeology 🏺

Quite the boggy, marshy, hardy heather root and tussocky grass strewn hike to Tod Crag yesterday. In northern Britain, 'cup and ring mark' rock art falls within the 4000-1500 BC period. Definitely a venerable contender for #WeekOForOld #AlphabetChallenge #Northumberland #archaeosky

Been thinking about radioarchaeology lately. A sci-fi concept where intrepid archaeologists travel FTL to intercept the original broadcasts of lost media and preserve them. I think I first read about it in a Jack McDevitt story but I don't remember its name.

Oooh! This is a great prompt! Archaeologists, what say you? Fwiw i teach a ton of things wish by archaeosky folks, so it would be interesting to see if you know what's being taught...

For me, the obvious answer is my minigraph archaeology as history - intentionally written as an intro text

Very honoured to give the Geoff Egan Memorial Lecture this year!
Drawing on Latin American scholars and artists, I will explore what an Archaeology of Radical Tenderness is and how transformative can be for our discipline.

A few more highlights from day #3 at the ##CES2026. Captivating plenary by Nicole Creanza on the evolution of learned behaviors in birds & humans. Also found myself in a kickass archaeology session & took a great deal from every talk. It's been great fun, Rabat! 🇲🇦

Ancient Eridu (Tell Abu Shahrein in Southern Iraq) is memorialized in Sumerian literature and historiography as the first city, the place to which the scepter of kingship first descended. It was inhabited since at least 5500 BCE.

One of the most neglected finds in #Caribbean #archaeology —spindle whorls.
This one is from St Lucia ~ AD 600, most likely to spin cotton or agave/maguey fibres.
