As someone who went through it, I promise you, it was an occupation. Looked and felt like we were being overtaken. I’m still triggered as are SO many of us. I am changed from it, it was absolute terror.

My husband refused to do the pledge in middle school. He envoked his first amendment right not to engage in statesanctioned speech. He got in trouble several times and each time his mom and dad were called in for a chat so they could make him. They backed him every time. He's stubborn as a mule.

i don't know if dying from privation is better or worse than being shot by a deputized patriot militia in a statesanctioned extrajudicial liquidation, which is what most portlanders (be they trump, harris, stein, oliver, kennedy, west, whatever, voters) seem to want for the unhoused here.
