#Syndrome_T
#Syndrome_T, i.e. persistent symptoms and reduced #QoL despite normal #TSH concentration, affects 10% of #hypothyroid patients on #levothyroxine. Careful, multimodal and personalised treatment can result in significantly improved outcomes.

Given the possibility of #Syndrome_T, not all patients who undergo #hemithyroidectomy will benefit. Two new risk scores identify predictors for #hypothyroidism, warranting therapy with #levothyroxine.

Growing evidence supports a role of sensorimotor and autonomic #neuropathy in #syndrome_T or #SORSHOT, i.e. reduced quality of life in treated #hypothyroidism. #SPINA_GT and #SPINA_GD predict nerve function and depression.

Should we, therefore, classify #syndrome_T as a psychosomatic disease? This would be premature and probably wrong. We found signs of sensorimotor and autonomic #neuropathy that depend on autoimmunity and #thyroid's secretory capacity (#SPINA_GT).

Is reduced quality of life in #hypothyroidism a psychological issue? A poster presented at #ECE2023 suggests this. It is, however, impossible to prove causality in a case-control study. We need prospective studies to understand #syndrome_T / #SORSHOT. doi.org/10.1530/endo...

Does impaired transport of #thyroid hormones into the central nervous system contribute to #syndrome_T / #SORSHOT? A recent study observed CSF/serum FT4 ratio to be associated with #QoL in treated #hypothyroidism. doi.org/10.1111/jne....
