For LCSH, the results show both full and close matches, including headings that are conceptually close to the gold-standard metadata. This clearly shows the types of metadata suggestions produced by LLMs.

I'm cataloging my home library, complete with LCSH subject headings and it's quite relaxing.

Now they're coming for "artificial intelligence". I would not have predicted the slide into newspeak for everyday words would happen this quickly. How naive. Everybody, resume the LCSH blocking protocol. Guess what I'm staying late to do
September 22, 2026 at 8:55 PM
There are 76 LCSH with "artificial intelligence" in the Alma CZ. Do you understand how LONG that norm rule will be, especially if we include FAST headings in this mix? I am not waiting that long for dinner. Scratch staying late. I'll deal tomorrow.

Library systems and libraries have cataloging standards. So do vendors who sell them books. It’s ultimately up to individual librarians to select the subject headings that will allow people to find information sources.

The same goes for reparative cataloging.

And some folks blindly follow LCSH.
Library of Congress updating subject headings doesn’t necessarily mean that library system is going to use them.

The Library of Congress can move quickly when it wants to classweb.org/tentative-su.... This is from the September tentative LCSH list. They moved swiftly to overwrite Denali and the Gulf of America, too. So much for librarians being freedom fighters. 📚

Am I surprised to see LoC move to change Ontario to America in LCSH?

No.

Am I disappointed to see it proposed and moved towards approval so quickly?

Yes.

Great reminder that information is not neutral and that includes how we organize and describe it.

The Republican president signed an executive order directing the Interior Department to update the lake’s name in the U.S. geographic naming service. ..... So now the Library of Congress will expedite renaming Lake Ontario in LCSH and I really hate this timeline.
