Never order MTHFR
How to make friends with a hematologist

Chapter 1

1. Order a peripheral smear before they ask
2. Never get a CBC without a diff
3. Stop the heparin before you call for a HIT consult
4. NEVER order MTHFR
5. Order a reticulocyte count before you consult for anemia

i know someone is selling snake oil when they start talking about the mthfr gene
I love it when people start talking about the mthfr mutation like it means anything at all. Half of humanity has a variant of the mthfr gene! Including me! Maybe including you and you'd never even know.

We are really living the movie Idiocracy. I went to Twitter to see all the comments complaining about California adding folic acid to tortillas, and wow. People have bought the MTHFR scam hook line and sinker.

A study of 1,035 people w/acute COVID shows a common genetic MTHFR variant (homozygous MTHFR C677T) has higher risk of severe COVID infections and Long COVID. buff.ly/Bevs5WN

Genetic testing for MTHFR gene may help stratify patients for treatments for COVID infection.

"This questionable statement reflects a widespread myth in the wellness community concerning an extremely common gene mutation called MTHFR, which can inhibit the ability of cells’ mitochondria to process folic acid."

Yep. I wrote about this in March 2019 and it won't die.

BTW, if you have an MTHFR variant or similar, it is true that you don't process folic acid as well.

✨SINCE YOU NEED FOLIC ACID TO LIVE, THAT MEANS YOU NEED MORE FOLIC ACID THAN OTHER PEOPLE.✨

Just in case anyone needs to hear it:
- Acetaminophen does not deplete glutathione unless you are taking toxic doses of it
- MTHFR variants don't prevent you from being able to use folic acid
- We don't know how folic acid works to prevent neural tube defects (NTDs); we simply know it does. (1/7)

I think anytime I want to swear on this app I'll just use MTHFR because every time I see that acronym I think that's what it means.

MTHFR!!

The leucovorin story is already blending with existing misinformation online about folic acid and MTHFR genotypes to create a new generation of medicalized claims without much evidence.

“This questionable statement reflects a widespread myth in the wellness community concerning an extremely common gene mutation called MTHFR”

MOTHERFUCKER! The mutation is called what?

I knew it! PNAS, MTHFR gene, just further proof of Everyone is 12!

(Conflicts of interest aside, I don’t want this information to discourage people from taking supplemental or prescription folate in coordination with their doctors, especially if they have one of the MTHFR genetic mutations that interfere with folate metabolization, as many autistic people do.)

I just learned a possible cause of chronic fatigue is called the "NO/ONOO cycle," which is the funniest name since MTHFR

I see MTHFR and my brain reads as motherfucker
"This questionable statement reflects a widespread myth in the wellness community concerning an extremely common gene mutation called MTHFR, which can inhibit the ability of cells’ mitochondria to process folic acid."

And, bc the internet: I'm on HRT, I have a chronic illness, I have regular bloodwork and know all the vitamins I need because the MTHFR gene mutation is a huge pain. I get enough sleep, I lift heavy, I walk every day. I STILL FEEL BAD SOMETIMES. LET A GAL WALLOW.

It’s a good question - it turns out there is no clinical utility. If there is an MTHFR variant, there is no benefit to giving supplements to lower homocysteine. The American College of Medical Genetics issued a guideline that discourages testing for the two common polymorphisms in the MTHFR gene.

There is a reason MTHFR looks like an abbreviation of motherfucker. It’s because it’s the dumbest motherfucker of all the labs that exist

Learned there’s a gene called “MTHFR” and all I can think of is “MOTHERFUCKER”

(It stands for 'methylenetetrahydrofolate')

They’re quick to label us as psychiatric. Ignoring that dysautonomia creates the physiological effects of anxiety w/out anxious thoughts. The psychiatrist figured out I had high histamine, MTHFR mutations and high prostaglandins. It’s mast cell disease, not a psych thing, meds have helped so much.

I think it's probably not, but every time I see the gene symbol MTHFR, I always wonder whether someone was making a joke.

If you are (or suspect you are) autistic, it’s worth getting tested to see if you have an MTHFR gene mutation. It’s just a simple blood test.

The inability to metabolize folate puts one at risk for developing a number of physical and mental health conditions.
