I'm preparing for scaling my game to much larger worlds & can't decide whether I want to support explicit spatial partitioning in my ECS or just do some stupid ad-hoc tricks outside it 🤔

Last week I got Mass Entity working and can spawn an absolutely massive amount of entities.

This week I will implement marquee selection using 2D Hierarchical Spatial Hash Grid so I don't have to iterate over every single entity every time a player goes to select a unit.

thoughts about:
- draw call ordering
- spatial data structures & visibility (should I even bother?)
- ECS (and how it meshes with spatial data structures)
- static vs. dynamic objects
- lighting

The app toolkits for this headset are a ripoff of visionOS, no question about it. They have Jetpack Compose (like SwiftUI) with panel rotation (developer.android.com/design/ui/xr...) and ECS with SceneCore (like RealityKit). I can't imagine making any more than i could on visionOS.

Single-cell RNA-seq/spatial transcriptomics reveal PAD muscle microenvironment: altered ATF3/ATF4 ECs, activated LYVE1+ macrophages. Responses invited! PMID:40954306, Nat Cardiovasc Res 2025 https://doi.org/10.1038/s44161-025-00709-y #Medsky #Pharmsky #RNA #ASHG #ESHG 🧪
Single-cell compendium of muscle microenvironment in peripheral artery disease reveals altered endothelial diversity and LYVE1+ macrophage activation | Nature Cardiovascular Research
Peripheral artery disease (PAD) results from atherosclerosis and chronic narrowing of lower limb arteries, leading to decreased muscle perfusion. Current treatments are suboptimal, partly due to limited understanding of PAD muscle pathology. Here we used single-cell RNA sequencing and spatial transcriptomics to analyze the composition of the muscle microenvironment in non-ischemic patients and patients with PAD. We identified ATF3/ATF4+ endothelial cells (ECs) that exhibit altered angiogenic and immune regulatory profiles during PAD and confirmed that ATF4 signaling in ECs is required for effective ischemia recovery. In addition, capillary ECs display features of endothelial-to-mesenchymal transition. Furthermore, LYVE1hiMHCIIlow macrophages are the dominant macrophage population in human muscle, adopting a more pro-inflammatory profile during PAD. Finally, we analyzed alterations in intercellular communication within the muscle microenvironment during PAD and confirmed that EC-derived

Interesting. 1 million is my CPU goal

Granted, theyre Ultima III style NPCs

On my old 32 core threadripper I got 1 billion RTS unit updates / second. Very simple movement (ie, tanks moving around and projectiles)

It was a double buffered spatial SoA (I guess its called an 'ECS' now) {cont}

Using pygame means while I have "built-in" resources for event loops, input capture, sprites, and rendering, the rest of the code is dealer's choice. I wrote the autotiling, the collision layer bitmasks, the "not an ECS" that handles entity lifecycles and queries, the grid for spatial queries etc

Characteristics and distribution of surface sediments in the Central East China Sea shelf - Frontiers in Marine Science
Characteristics and distribution of surface sediments in the Central East China Sea shelf - Frontiers in Marine Science
Based on grain-size analysis of the surface sediments on the central East China Sea (ECS) shelf, the spatial distribution, depositional settings, and transport patterns of these sediments were investigated in 2022. The results show that the study area can be divided into four Subareas: the nearshore clayey-silt or silt-dominated muddy deposition Subarea (Subarea I), the inner shelf silty-clay-dominated muddy deposition Subarea (Subarea II), the inner and outer shelf transition zone sand-silt-clay or clayey-sand-dominated mixed deposition Subarea (Subarea III), and the outer shelf sandy deposition Subarea (Subarea IV). Typical sediment grain size frequency curves and cumulative frequency curves reflect the sediment differentiation in Subareas I and II, as well as the sediment mixing and modification in Subareas III and IV. The spatial distribution of the sediments is affected by the hydrodynamic and environmental conditions. The main components of the surface sediments in this area are Yangtze River-derived terrigenous clasts. The contents of the sand, silt, and clay fractions obtained using the laser grain size analysis method were approximately 5% larger, 20% larger, and 25% smaller, respectively, than those acquired using the sieve and pipette analysis method, which was the reason that clayey-silt has been reported to occupy almost all of the muddy zone (Subareas I and II) in previous studies. Grain-size trend analysis images revealed the existence of generally north-to-south and west-to-east (i.e., coast-to-offshore) transport trends of the surface sediment in this area, indicating continuity of the provenance, environment, age, and genetic type of the sediments on the ECS shelf. Local regions exhibited different transport directions, which were influenced by the northward Taiwan Warm Current and upwelling. Mixed sediments experienced material redistribution and exchange with neighboring muddy and sandy deposits. The bidirectional northwest-southeast transport trends of some sandy sediments suggest a tidal genesis of the linear sand ridges and their effect on the sandy sediments in this region. Fine clay particles are spread over the entire ECS shelf, suggesting cross-shelf transport of modern fine-grained sediments.

Local Chemical Gradients in a Mammalian Cortex Measured In Vivo With a Silicon Nanodialysis Mass Spectrometry Platform
Fluorescence image of the coronal slice of mouse brain where multiple neurochemicals have been measured in vivo with a nanodialysis platform coupled to CE-MS to reveal strong millimeter-scale spatial chemical gradients. Formation and maintenance of such local chemical compartments in the otherwise diffusion-homogeneous cortex indicates strong regulation of ECS neurochemistry imposed by glial-neuron interactions that may heavily influence physiological and pathophysiological modulation of neural computations. ABSTRACT Chemical extrasynaptic signaling in the mammalian brain is involved in the control of behavior via modulation of neural activity, in wiring the brain by directing the axonal growth, in localization of pharmacological effects of drugs, and in regulating the neuroinflammation. Local gradients of various neurochemicals in the brain are difficult to study in vivo due to their complex spatiotemporal dynamics induced by intricate interactions between neurons and glial cells that are not well understood. Here, to directly measure in vivo gradients of multiple neurotransmitters and metabolites simultaneously, we utilize an open-flow silicon nanodialysis sampling platform coupled with sensitive mass spectrometry. Results reveal strong millimeter-scale spatial gradients in concentration of neurotransmitters, neuromodulators, and astroglial modulators in a mouse cortex. Formation and maintenance of such local chemical compartments indicate strong regulation of brain neurochemistry by glial-neuron interactions that may heavily influence physiological and pathophysiological modulation of brain functions.
