Excited to announce our new study (w/ @maxkrummel.bsky.social) published today @nature.com: Macrophages “hold our living identities” by taking tiny bites from living cells and presenting this information to CD8 T cells.

🧪 Inflammation has a pH switch

This study shows that as inflammation lowers cell pH, it switches off certain inflammatory genes.

A key protein, BRD4, senses the acidity, helping tune the immune response and limit damage.

Regulation of inflammatory responses by pH-dependent transcriptional condensates
BRD4 functions as an intracellular pH sensor through a conserved histidine-rich intrinsically disordered region. Inflammation-associated acidification triggers a pH-dependent switch in transcriptional...

We think this creates a stable depot of antigens.

Macrophages may not only present this material to T cells, but also potentially share with other immune cells, with implications for self-tolerance and tumor immunity.

I was very influenced by Usborne's How Your Body Works as a child so I can never stop anthropomorphizing cells, they're all little people with jobs and relationships. Delighted that Hataraku Saibou/Cells At Work is doing the same for the younger generation.
